Work at Harborline

About 1,100 people in San Diego, Ontario, Phoenix and Tucson, doing the work that decides whether a family is back in its house by spring. Most of them stay a long time.

What the work is like

Insurance is a promise made in advance and kept on someone's worst day. Most of our jobs are about the second half of that. An adjuster standing in a burned-out kitchen, a service representative on the phone with someone whose car is upside down on the shoulder, an underwriter deciding whether we can offer wildfire cover on a ridge in Ramona. The work is detailed and sometimes hard, and it matters to the person on the other end in a way that is easy to see.

Because we are a mutual, we answer to our members rather than to shareholders. In practice that means fewer reorganizations, fewer quarterly targets that change the job under you, and a long view on training people properly.

Where we work

San Diego

Head office on Point Loma. Claims, underwriting, service, finance, technology and everything else.

Phoenix

Arizona headquarters. Claims, service and agency relations for the state.

Ontario, California

Claims office and drive-in claims center for the Inland Empire and Los Angeles County.

Tucson

Claims office for southern Arizona, and the base for our Arizona catastrophe team.

Many office roles are hybrid, with three days a week in the office. Field adjusters work from home and from the road, and catastrophe adjusters travel within both states when a storm or a fire hits.

Teams

Claims
Field and desk adjusters for auto and property, appraisers, catastrophe adjusters, and the 24-hour claims line. About 420 people, our largest team.
Member service
Policy changes, billing questions and quotes by phone, in English and Spanish. Licensed representatives.
Underwriting
Personal lines underwriters, property inspectors and the wildfire risk group.
Actuarial and finance
Pricing, reserving, reinsurance, investments and the annual statement.
Technology
The systems behind policies, billing and claims, the member website, and information security.
Agency relations
Working with the 340 independent agencies that write our policies.

What we offer

  • Medical, dental and vision coverage through a Veranta Health group plan, with the company paying most of the premium for employees and their families.
  • A 401(k) with a dollar-for-dollar match on the first 6 percent of pay.
  • Paid licensing. We pay for the adjuster and agent licenses your role needs, and for the time to study.
  • Tuition help for insurance designations and college courses related to your work.
  • Three weeks of paid time off in your first year, rising with service, and two paid volunteer days.
  • Extra pay and time off after a catastrophe deployment.

Starting out

Each June we hire a class of new claims trainees, most of them recent graduates and some changing careers. The program is twelve weeks: classroom work on coverage and estimating, then supervised claims, then a desk of your own. You will be licensed by the end of it. Applications for the June 2027 class open in January.

Current openings

Updated each Monday. To apply, call recruiting with the reference number and we will send you the application and a description of the role.
