Auto insurance

Cover for the car you drive to work, the one your teenager borrows, and the trip to the river in July. Written for California and Arizona drivers, priced by people who live there.

What an auto policy covers

A Harborline auto policy is built from parts. Liability is the one the law requires. The rest you choose, and an agent or our quote will show you the price of each part on its own line so you can see what you are paying for.

Liability

Injuries to other people and damage to their property when an accident is your fault. It also pays for your legal defense if you are sued.

Collision

Repairs to your own car after it hits another car or an object, whoever was at fault. Required by most lenders and lease companies.

Comprehensive

Damage that is not a collision: theft, vandalism, fire, falling branches, hail, flood, and the deer on the road to Flagstaff.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist

Your injuries, and your passengers', when the other driver has no insurance or not enough of it. In California it can also cover damage to your car.

Medical payments

Medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident, whoever was at fault, up to the limit you pick.

Rental reimbursement

A rental car while yours is in the shop after a covered claim, at a daily amount and for up to 30 days.

Roadside assistance

Towing, jump starts, flat tires, lockouts and fuel delivery, answered by a person around the clock.

Loan or lease payoff

If your car is a total loss and you owe more than it is worth, this pays the difference, up to a quarter of the car's value.

How much liability to carry

California and Arizona each set a minimum amount of liability coverage, and both minimums are low next to what a serious accident costs. A hospital stay after a freeway collision can pass the state minimum in a day. We will sell you the minimum if that is what you want, but most of our members carry limits of $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident and $100,000 for property, and many add an umbrella policy on top.

Deductibles

The deductible is the part of a collision or comprehensive claim you pay yourself. A higher deductible lowers your premium. Liability has no deductible.

Deductibles you can choose
CoverageOptionsMost common
Collision$250, $500, $1,000, $1,500$500
Comprehensive$100, $250, $500, $1,000$250
Glass, Arizona full glass option$0About half of Arizona members

If another driver caused the accident, we go after their insurer for what we paid, and your deductible with it. When we get it back, so do you.

California and Arizona are not the same

California

State law decides which things come first in setting an auto price: your driving record, the miles you drive each year, and how many years you have been licensed. Where you park matters less than it does elsewhere, and your credit history is not used.

Arizona

You can add full glass coverage, which repairs or replaces a windshield with no deductible. On Arizona highways in summer, gravel and heat crack a lot of glass, and most of our Arizona members take it.

What auto insurance does not cover

  • Wear and tear, mechanical breakdown, and tires that simply wore out.
  • Driving for a ride-hailing or delivery app, unless you add our rideshare endorsement. Without it, the policy stops when the app is on.
  • Your belongings stolen from the car. Those fall under a home or renters policy.
  • Racing, and damage done on purpose.
  • Custom wheels, stereos and paint beyond $1,500, unless you list them.
  • Driving in Mexico. You will need a Mexican policy for the day, bought before you cross.

The full terms are in your policy, and your agent or our service team will walk through any of them with you. Coverage is subject to the terms and limits of the policy you buy.
